Nene. Rarest goose in the world. A story of human folly and near extinction. A story of hope and dedication. Once reduced to less than 30 individuals, the native Hawaiian Nene now numbers approximately 2000. You will see bands on the legs of almost every one. The population is closely monitored. The Nene is one of my favorite subjects. I love their personality and completely unique habitat as compared with other goose species. The Hawaii Nene is believed to have descended from the Canada Goose, and possibly the Giant Canada Goose as well.
